Tony Alpert

One of the founders of Smarter Balanced, and a national expert in educational assessment design and measurement, Anthony “Tony” Alpert specializes in the use of technology to improve assessment systems.
With nearly 25 years of experience in this space, Mr. Alpert has held leadership roles in educational assessment, educational finance, and assessment operations and research, including several years as the director of assessment at the Oregon Department of Education.
He has served as a member of the U.S. Department of Education’s Technical Advisory Committee and as a leader on grants from the U.S. Department of Education and the Hewlett Foundation. Mr. Alpert currently leads the 12-member state/territory in the Smarter Balanced Consortium and collaborates with educational leaders at all levels to ensure the Smarter Balanced assessment system meets the needs of states, educators, and students across the country.
Mr. Alpert received his B.A. in psychology and sociology summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota and his M.S. in psychology, sociology, and decision sciences from the University of Oregon.
